Solomon Grey - Gen V

Last week, I caught a play of Solomon Grey's debut single on Black Butter Records, Gen V. Featuring a pulsing electronic melody, vocoder vocals and melancholy lyrics, it's lush and addictive. The video, featuring sweeping cityscapes is appropriate for the track and shows Solomon Grey chanelling the likes of Radiohead, Unkle and m83.

The small amount of info available about Solomon Grey indicates that they are a duo from the UK and Australia. A single titled Firechild leaked late in 2012, but seems to have been pulled from Youtube and other sites following their signing to Black Butter Records.

Based in London, BB Records had a big year in 2012, thanks to a number 1 single from Rudimental. Rudimental have been a big draw at festivals this year. Their success is perhaps indicative of the potential that BB Records see in Solomon Grey.

The label have put out Gen V as a single, with a remix from Drums of Death and a B-side, Gascarene Sound. The B-Side is of a similar quality and style to Gen V, though a little more chilled out. It shows influences from artists such as James Blake and Bon Iver.

While there's not much more known about the duo, there's plenty to enjoy in this first single for the time being.
